7 Reasons why Walking is the Ulitmate Wellness Hack

There's a trend going around-- it's health. We are constantly searching for the next trendiest workout regimen to incorporate at our next gym session. With all the "official" physical trainers commenting on each exercise that you should or should not do, it can seem daunting and another reason to not go to the gym in the first place. I, myself, can attest to this, reason why it took me nearly two years to start up my fitness journey again.

However, as easy as it may be, we cannot overlook the simple, yet powerful act of walking daily. We often solely recognize it to get from point A to point B, and quickly disregard the great holistic wellness benefits we gain within our mind and body.

I have compiled the top 7 reasons why walking is the ultimate wellness hack. Let’s dive in!

1. Supports Physical Health

Walking offers an array of benefits including reducing fat, improving cardiovascular health, reducing your risk for chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, etc., kickstarting your immune system, protecting your bones, and improving life longevity. The list can go on and on. Remember, health is not a sprint to physical optimization, but a life-lasting journey.

2. Enhances Creativity

Research shows that walking can boost creativity and problem-solving skills. Just by the change of scenery, if you’re traveling to a gym or on a walk outdoors, the rhythmic nature of walking can spark new ideas and make you feel unstoppable!

3. Improves Mood and Reduces Stress

We all have those days where we feel like we’re dragging. Crawling maybe. Our brains are filled with fog, and nothing makes sense. You may even be going through a tough time personally or professionally, and everything feels like the world is against you. Walking, thankfully, stimulates the release of endorphins, your brain’s natural mood booster. It helps enhance your cognitive function, helping you think clearly and relieve any stress or brain fog. Next time you’re on the struggle bus, try going for a walk and find yourself stress free.

4. Stimulates Digestive System

For my friends who struggle with a gastrointestinal disease like me, walking is your best friend! Walking can greatly improve your bowel movements, especially after a heavy meal or food items high on the FODMAP list (more on this soon!). Safe to say, when you start moving, your bowels start moving, too. No more tummy aches!

5. Connects you with Nature

I highly recommend you leap at the opportunity to go outside, especially with this nice transition into the Fall season. By walking outdoors, you can immerse yourself into the beauty of our natural world. Also known as grounding, one often feels connected to the Earth and thus more inclined to experience reduced stress and a rejuvenated spirit.

6. Encourages Social Connections

Simple suggestion: grab your bestie, and go for a walk! This is a great social activity that mutually benefits your friendships and health goals at the same time. It is a great opportunity for quality time and meaningful conversations, all while getting your steps in. Friends who motivate each other to do better, stay together!

7. Low Impact

My friend, I know exercise can be tough, not only on your body but on your mind as well. You may fight so many internal battles to lift weights or go for a run when everyone around you is moving 100x faster. But, exercise doesn’t have to be so tough. Walking is a great low-impact exercise that accommodates people in various health levels while working your entire body. Remember, the turtle beat the rabbit to the finish line.

In any stage of fitness, walking is a KEY component to healthier living. Before I averaged 2,500 steps daily and now reach 8,000 with the help of my portable walking pad. (LINK BELOW!) It’s been truly a game changer for me. I highly encourage you start taking 10-15 minutes of your day and go for a walk, even if it starts around your house. You will feel a huge difference! You can do this, bestie. I believe in you and am rooting for you!
